Where it started

To start talking about traveling, I got to tell you that my favorite trip was was to Disneyland Orlando in 2018. For me, this one and all the other trips were life changers!

Sadly, the process of organizing it is always stressful and it gets worse when we are traveling in group. Moreover, if you are like me and always get the job to organize it to everyone, you probably got overloaded once in your life because of it. That's why we decided to design an app for travel plannings!

Is that a good idea?

To understand what is the actual tourism market scenario and people's behaviors when dealing with travel planning , we started a market analysis. Look what we found:

  • The tourism is one of the bigger growing industries in the world (ANPTUR).

  • It is also the biggest industry on the comercial services (ANPTUR).

  • A tourism professional, interviewed by us, affirmed:

"It happened a "boom" on the tourism market after the pandemics."

  • When planning a trip, people don't go to agencies anymore. 53% of them prefers to do it by themselves using the internet (ANPTUR).

  • Usually people plan their adventures. 40% of people starts planning between 3–6 months before going to their destiny (Hibou).

  • 79% of the Survey participants answered that usually they travel in groups (with their family or friends).

So, for now, we know that: the tourism is a growing market, people are traveling more and in groups, and they plan and buy their trips by themselves.

How do they feel?

Following, we needed better understand how people plan their group travels and how do they feel during this process. To discover it, we did a Survey and interviewed travelers and tourism professionals. That's the main results:

  • 66% of the Survey participants answered that usually one or two people are responsible for all the organization. According to the interviews, it makes the organizers feel frustrated, guilt and anxious.

  • 82% of people keep the travel's information in WhatsApp groups and usually the partners loose those info and asks the organizer to resend it many times again. People who were interviewed said that eventually the organizers get stressed and the rest of the group feels confused.

"I always get stressed when we have to decide things about the trip and everyone

looses the links on the WhatsApp groups."

  • It's always hard to share and split the costs with everyone. Some people ends up feeling injured for being be charged more than the rest of the group. In addition, commonly the main organizer is the one who pays more.

Let me introduce you to Carina!

After researching, we build our main persona: Carina do Socorro. She represents the group of people who usually plan and organizes the travel's information.

Carina has three main problems that we tried to resolve:

1 - Carina needs a way to efficiently share the trip details with her partners to avoid that informations get loose on WhatsApp groups.

For this problem the user can to create a group travel with her partners and add all the information inside the organizing folders in the app. Carina can also upload archive and add more organizers to help her! Each participant has a individual board to save their own information and share individual plans with the group too.

2 - Carina needs a way to include the participant's opinion during the travel planning to avoid feeling responsible for all the decisions.

To resolve this one, Carina can allow the participants to suggest or start a voting in each folder until a determined date.

3 - Carina needs a more organized way to share the costs with her travel partners to avoid unfair splits.

Inside the app Carina and her partners can also register the costs and payments about the travel. While registering, the user can choose to split it with everyone or with selected people and the it will automatically calculate how much each person needs to pay.

(We also have two more personas that we chose to focus later but for sure, resolving Carina's problems will help them too!)

All about the branding

After designing the low and mid-fi, we developed our branding. Check out our moodboard:

The name of our app is: Zoptrips. A short name, easy to speak in any language and using the "Z" sound that reminds something fast. On our logo, we also add a paper plane whitch is a common symbol for traveling.

All about the design system were choose to bring a friendly and happy but organized environment to the app, so here is our Design System.

The final prototype!

After doing all this work, we designed the hi-fi prototype of Zoptrips! The hi-fi prototype was tested using the concept, usability and accessibility tests and iterated according to it and you can test it right here:

Next steps!

We don't want to stop here! For the next steps, we need to test again (after the iteration of the first round of tests), iterate it again, programming and launching it at the apps stores.
